"The Key: A Painting That Came Home" 🖤

The Key

symbolic self portrait (oil on canvas)

"You've always had the power, my dear.

 You've had it all along."

~Glinda, the Good Witch: The Wizard of Oz

"The Key"  has had a journey of her own. She lived on another's wall for a long spell — someone who needed her. That is another story. Let's just say I wanted her back where she belonged. Finally, the stars aligned, and through some negotiations, she came home.

This painting is one of my first symbolic self portraits, painted some years ago. It was born from the struggles of finding my way — the changes within my life, the unknowns, the questions. At times our journey can seem a confusing one...and such it was for me. I dare say it is for all of us, at one time or another...right?

So I searched and questioned — obsessively seeking answers. One thing I discovered: we should question everything, including ourselves. 🤔 🤭

It took a while to realize that all along, the answers — the key — lived within my own heart. That is what this piece is about, and the reason for the "Oz" quote, which happens to be one of my favorites. So many divine messages in that old movie...much like our own heart.

All we need do is listen...

Thank you for stopping by.

Prints of "The Key" are available in [The Studio Shop].

🖤 Little side note: Years ago I drew a self portrait that included a skeleton key. In time, I discovered actual skeleton keys buried in a pile of papers and debris in what is now my studio here at Villa Mystique. Among them was one that looked exactly like the one I had drawn. It is difficult to see in this image, but there is an upside down heart within it — much like my own perfect-imperfect heart. 🖤

(Black sheep of the family — the black heart is fitting. Ha.) 😘
